Thank you, Mother!

A Mother is a priceless gift. She is so precious that her value cannot be measured. During this season of honoring mothers, take a moment to stop and think about how blessed your life has been, as a result of your mother.

When did the blessing of your mother’s love really begin for you? I believe your mother’s love for you began when you were in her womb. That is when your mother decided that you were worthy to be loved and cared for. She chose to have you! Yes, you! She realized that you were a gift from God.

In Psalms 139:13 -16 in the New Living Translation seen below, David speaks of God’s miracle of conception and the uniqueness of every child that is conceived.

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

WOW! Every child conceived in their mother’s womb has a book written about them in heaven. This book contains all of the days of that child’s life before they are birthed into this world. That means that your life was planned by God before you were held in your mother’s arms. That’s a powerful revelation! And I know that you are thankful and grateful to your mother for giving you the opportunity to live—and to live the life that God had previous planned just for you!

But your birth was only just the beginning. Raising you from a baby to an adult encompassed a daily routine of sacrifices! The sacrifices that many mothers endure for their children remind me of Mary, Jesus’ mother, and the sacrifices that she made for Him. The scripture tells us (paraphrasing), that Mary was engaged to Joseph when suddenly an angel by the name of Gabriel appeared to her with a message from God. Gabriel shared God’s plan for her and the plan that God had for her future Son. The plan was no ordinary plan, it was a life altering one. It was a plan that caused the people who knew them to look at her and Joseph, and her family in a negative light.

God’s idea threw all of her plans into a tailspin and could have most definitely caused her to lose her fiancé. In addition, His plan meant that she had to deal with the stigma of having a child out of wedlock in Biblical times. Her life quickly became complicated and agreeing to God’s plan was scary! However regardless of the issues listed above, due to her obedience to God and her love for a promised child, she uttered the following words found in Luke 1:38. (KJV)

… “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”

Yes. Mary sacrificed a lot for her child. But, as you read in scripture, you’ll find that Mary’s decision to trust God, and to sacrifice it all for Jesus was the right decision, not only for her, but for the whole world. Today, her name is renowned because of her obedience to God and her sacrifice for her child.

Mary’s love for Jesus was no different than any mother’s love for her child today. Mother’s sacrifice for their children because they love them, and they want the best for them. Likewise, your mother has sacrificed her life for you. She may have done it afraid, or through toil and tears, but bottom line, she did it for you! And because of your mother’s many selfless sacrifices you are now able to experience success in life. Looking back over the years, I am certain that your able to see God’s providential hand, and your mother’s sacrificial love weaving together God’s great plan for your life! And your heart should shout out thank you mom—for every sacrifice that she made for you!

Additionally, all mothers should be thanked for one of their most commendable characteristics, “never giving up on their children!” People give up on people all the time. But not a mother! Despite what her child does or doesn’t do, she is always there for her child. Either, by praying for them, giving sound advice, or secretly working behind the scene to make things better for them. Mamma never gives up!

This quality that mothers possess remind me of a true story that someone shared with me a long time ago about a teenaged girl that was molested by her father. This teenage girl ran away from home to end the constant sexual abuse. And as a result, she found herself walking the streets looking for refuge. As time progressed, she ended up living with an older man that was physically abusive to her and becoming pregnant by him. A year later, she gave birth to a baby girl and gave her up for adoption.

When the teenager became an adult, she made several attempts to connect with the family that had adopted her child. Her attempts were futile because the family wanted nothing to do with her, nor did they want her daughter to be made aware of her endeavors. Many years passed by and the pain of rejection and hurt multiplied. However, mama never gave up!

Finally, a family member agreed to set up a meeting for her to meet her daughter. But her daughter refused to attend the meeting believing that her mother didn’t care about her or love her since she had been given up for adoption.

After a great while had pasted, she decided to share her story of how her mother had given her up for adoption with someone. And in doing so she experienced a revolutionary change in her thought process about her mother. For the first time in her life she began to see things through her mother’s eyes. She began to envision life as a pregnant homeless teenager living in an abusive household without a mother or father to run to for help. At that moment, she realized that her mother loved her indeed, and that her actions were not to harm her, but to love and to protect her.

Needless to say, a reunion transpired, and today this family had the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day together because this mother never gave up on her child!

During this season when mothers are being honored, stop, and take the time, to honor and to praise your mother for all that she has done for you! Lastly, also honor and praise your mother that adopted you or embraced you as her own child when she married your parent.

A Mother’s Prayer:

Father, in the Name Jesus, I asked for supernatural wisdom and strength to fulfill my role as a mother to my child(ren). Help me to grow in your word as I make it my first priority. And as your word grows in my heart may it produce fierce faith to contend for my children in the midst of life’s battles. May your love for me position me to always extend unshakable love to my children. In Jesus Name! Amen!
